My 10-second age(ing) crisis
Yesterday I was looking in the mirror when I thought/think I saw the beginnings of crow’s feet at the corners of my eyes. People who know me know I’m not particularly vain – I rarely wear makeup and some days look downright sloppy – but it still startled me. Oh my gosh, was my first thought, I might actually have to consider eye cream.
Yes, for all my diligence about washing my face and moisturising daily, it has never dawned on me to get an eye cream. For all the skincare products I see in the pages of my magazines, for all the beauty events I’ve attended, for all the advice I’ve received (and on occasion, dispensed), it was quite a shock to me that I’d never thought of it.
My second thought was, I’m getting older. And, so that’s why I’ve never thought of using eye cream. I’ve always associated it with slightly more, ahem, mature people but I am slowly realising that I’m no longer 22. I turn 27 next month and while I will be the first to tell you that’s nowhere near old, I’m not that far off from 30, which by the way I also don’t consider old.
But maybe, I am now old enough to begin reaping the effects of my carelessness with suncare and my love of roasting in the sun during holidays, and maybe, I should start doing something about it. Crap.
