Because I felt like it

Posted on October 31, 2007, by soph, under Reading and Writing.

On Monday I thought it was going to be a lazy day. Y’know, it being Monday and the weather and all. Today, Wednesday, I realise, it’s going to be a lazy week, which is rather ironic given that our deadline has been brought forward by a day.

There is something really, really satisfying in seeing words appear on a blank page, in seeing abstract thoughts take tangible form through a series of black letters on a white background, in being able to type without looking at my fingers because typing is, after all, a major part of what I do for a living.

Today is Wednesday. I’m exactly halfway through a work week, yet I feel as though I am nearing the end of the week. Suddenly, the weeks go by too quickly. Suddenly, five days of work doesn’t seem quite so interminable as it used to when it was, say, five days of school. Unless of course there is something at the end of the week to look forward to, like a vacation or something - that should drag it out some.

Yesterday, I was so desperate for the next episode of Grey’s Anatomy I actually figured out how to download torrents all by myself. Yesterday, I bought a pair of super-high heels to wear for nighttime formal events because I felt like it.

Today is the 31st October. Tomorrow is the 1st November. Yet another new page to turn to on my calendar. Yet another month nearer to the end of 2007. When you actually write the date out yourself, you realise, it’s going to be another year…

Tomorrow is the start of Nanowrimo. I thought I would be up for giving it a go. And then, I’m not so sure anymore.

lazy rainy monday

Posted on October 29, 2007, by soph, under Uncategorized.

It’s not that I don’t have anything to do, it’s just that I don’t have anything I need to do right now. I have given up trying to do anything else today. The clock reads 3.20pm and with less than two hours to go before I plan to pop over to my mum’s to see Grandma, I am allowing myself to sit back and relax - just for today - knowing it’s been a productive weekend and there’s currently nothing on my to-do list.

Unless of course you count heading over to Mid Valley Gardens to buy that pair of shoes I’ve been thinking about, and an impulse urge to visit two boutiques in Bangsar where I’m told they have really cool stuff.

This officially breaks my streak

Posted on October 26, 2007, by soph, under Celebrities.

…of never asking any of the celebrities I’ve interviewed for a photo. I’ve passed up quite a few, but Y reckons if I don’t have photographic evidence, our kids are never going to believe I met these people. Like they’re really going to care, you know. He insisted I take this one.

That’s me and Yen Tyng with Siti Nurhaliza. The girl’s sweet as, though that didn’t make the day any less eventful. I swear I’m wasting my life away waiting around to interview celebrities. And all this through a fog of flu-induced blockage and fuzziness too. Pat on back, I’m learning to toughen up.

All blown out

Posted on October 26, 2007, by soph, under It's a Girl's Life.

I can’t remember the last time I got the flu so bad, but I am pleased to report that I am well on the road to normalcy. Blowing your nose, I have discovered, is a tiring exercise, but one that repays your efforts well with the feeling of being much better. This very instant, I am distinctly pleased to find that I have gotten some of my appetite back and found the energy to pick a fight with hubby. If all goes according to plan, I shall be fit and ready to do some shopping this weekend. The urge to spend does not strike often so when it does, I make sure to indulge. Besides, Y said I could.

We decided to try and be happening

Posted on October 22, 2007, by soph, under Career, Hanging Out.

Last weekend, two colleagues and I decided we would try and be happening by showing up at a MixFM party we’d been invited to. It was in Maison, KL, on a Saturday night, and you know what going down to KL means for me - mini road-trip! It seriously feels like that, sometimes.

We got there “fashionably late”, that is to say, almost one hour after official start time, but still pretty early by clubbing standards because the event started at 9pm. The great thing about it was, all our drinks were on the house, or on MixFM. The bad thing about it was, all three of us had to drive so we had to watch the alcohol intake. Bummer! Also, the DJs must have forgotten the invite said ‘Retro Mix’ because they barely played any retro songs! And we were so psyched up to do the Y.M.C.A. if they played it… seriously.

So we did what any self-respecting potato* would do in that situation: we talked (or rather, shouted because the music was so loud), we drank and we camwhored.

I seem to have lost the ability to take pictures of myself as quickly as I learnt it.

Doing the Hong Kong starlet 1, 2, 5 pose. This is 1…

This is 2…

This is 5. Yes, I am rather embarrassed. I don’t know what we were thinking.

My fellow potatoes*. Christine (L) is not drunk, despite how she looks. Really. And that’s Reta (R).

After about an hour or so, we finally deigned to get our asses off the chairs. I know I look like a tomato, but it’s called good circulation. Remind me to take photos after I’ve regained normalcy in future, please.

See, I can look normal.

With Dawn Jeremiah.

The three of us posing with a cigarette.

This I stole off Reta’s blog. Those drinks you see on the table are yum. I’ll be getting more sex on the beaches in future. That’s what the drink is called lah.

And this I stole too.

And this, the best accidental snap of the night.

* The company we work for is called Hot Potato. Figure it out.

It’s F-r-i-d-a-y!

Posted on October 19, 2007, by soph, under Uncategorized.

At the end of a workweek that has passed by in a flash, thanks to Hari Raya giving us Monday off, I keep revisiting Facebook while ruminating over the many, many events lined up in the coming week. Gawd, at the rate I’m going, people are going to think I’m actually sociable.

Rossi

Today, I was in the presence of greatness.

I wasn’t even half as excited as some of the people gathered to see him, but I hold this guy in sky-high regard all the same. He is, after all, one of the greatest motorcyle racers of all time. And he seemed pretty obliging about signing just about anything too, shirt-clad man boobs included. The poor guy.

To find out more about him, try Googling. After all, that’s what Wikipedia is for.

Change of heart

Posted on October 17, 2007, by soph, under Uncategorized.

Last week I embraced the idea of working late because it’s not like I have a lot to do at home if Y isn’t around anyway.

This week I can’t wait to leave so I can go home and read / watch TV serials.

Either the rainy weather’s getting to me, or I’m being one temperamental ____.

It’s been a long time comin’

Posted on October 17, 2007, by soph, under Hanging Out.

Eight of us from high school got together last weekend. The only time we ever get together, at least in groups of more than two or three, is usually when someone gets married, or someone is leaving. That night, it was for the latter. Ironically, she’s migrating to Melbourne.

The reason for the gathering.

I hadn’t seen them in ages!

The rest of us. G’s got his eye on the one in pink. Unfortunately, she - along with most of the others - are already accounted for. Sorry big guy.

After dinner it was off to Velvet for drinks…

… where I finally sort of mastered the art of taking pictures of myself. I swear this is the first time all intended targets actually fit into the frame. For more pics from the night, go here.

I started this three days ago and never finished it

Posted on October 14, 2007, by soph, under Travels.

I wasn’t in a good mood then. I was just restless.

Out of a firm determination not to do anything that did not need to be done that day, I decided to finally put up pics from Penang.

Porridge for supper at 2am. By the time G had driven our singing asses up north, it was past midnight. At least our lungs got a good workout en route. I’ve got audio evidence but I’m saving that for a rainy day.

Penang is all about the food. But you already knew that.

Two of our favourites (actually, G thought it was just okay). I’ve always been partial to asam laksa and I only ever eat cendol in Penang and Melaka.

The boys at supper. The boys tucking in (note famous asam laksa stall behind C). The boys in the backseat. What happens in the backseat, stays in the backseat.

And because attending the wedding dinner was a big reason for our trip up north, here are wedding floor managers Gideon and Marcus gleefully marking the end of their duties, and May, G and Y between lots of wine. The 2.0 megapixel camera on my phone is hardly all that, but it tries its best.
