My name is Sophia Goh and I am a

Writer. I wrote my first essay when I was six years old. My mother decided I had a knack for languages and that I should become a lawyer. She was right about the first part. I graduated with a B.A. in Media & Communications and Cultural Studies from Melbourne University, and got my first full-time job working as a Beauty Assistant with a women’s magazine. This for a girl who had never worn makeup in her life (at the time).

I am currently a freelance writer and contributing editor for a fortnightly celebrity and entertainment magazine. I love the fast-paced nature of my work, the perks and, best of all, the fact that I get to talk to some really interesting, intelligent and inspiring people, and share their stories with the rest of the world. I occasionally wear mascara.

Wife. I met my husband one month before my 21st birthday and we got engaged a year later, just before my final semester of university. Most of them probably won’t admit it, but many of my friends thought I was mad. Or pregnant. We got married soon after I graduated, one month shy of my 23rd birthday. For our honeymoon, we splurged on flight tickets to New York and the Bahamas where, because we were on a tight budget, we ate a lot of hot dogs and pizza.

Mum. On 26 July 2009, less than a month after our fourth anniversary, hubby and I discovered that I was pregnant. We decided to keep the baby’s sex a surprise. Almost everyone, including hubby, thought it was a boy. But baby Kaylin had other plans. She arrived on 18 March 2010, at exactly 38 weeks. Her daddy thinks she’s going to be a rock star.

I speak English, Mandarin, Malay and a couple of other Chinese dialects but wish I could speak more languages. I learnt Spanish off a CD and sign language off a book but I’ve forgotten most of it. I am also a TESOL-qualified teacher, huge sports fan, avid reader and scuba diver. I love travelling but haven’t done much of that since I got pregnant. I am occasionally nerdy.
