Yesterday, I said: “God, how about a present from you for my birthday?”

This morning, I read:

(God) said, “You’re my son,

And today is your birthday.

What do you want? Name it:

Nations as a present? Continents as a prize?

You can command them all to dance for you,

Or throw them out with tomorrow’s trash.

Psalms 2 (The Message Version)

Wow.

I didn’t even know that verse existed. But I’d forgotten that I’m promised nations and continents, if I only just ask. I’d fallen into the common, usually unconscious perception that God is this high-up entity who bestows gifts according to His whims and fancies, often only at our fervent pleas. At least, that’s how we behave sometimes. But here He is, offering us the world which we wouldn’t even dare to ask for, and He says, “What do you want? Name it”.

When you’re promised nations and continents, the trivialities of everyday life somehow just seem so insignificant. Those things that you may have desired before suddenly seem so unworthy. And so, along with an awesome promise from a loving God, is a reminder that even though He cares about the details and He cares about the little things in our lives, we are offered the world and so we should ask but wisely.

So what did I ask? I’m not telling you.

To all those who were there last night (and who helped but couldn’t make it), thanks for the precious memories. To the one who made it possible in the first place, I love you too.
