David Archuleta

The last of my two-week celebrity spree. I’ve always been a far, far bigger fan of David’s voice than of his cutesy looks, but I can see why girls shriek for him and aunties want to adopt him. I don’t. I just want to hear him sing. And I was very proud to see that he’d developed some moves. In fact, the way he sometimes held the microphone reminded me of Chris Daughtry.

Imagine this times two and you have an idea of the number of people who turned up to watch David’s showcase at Sunway Amphitheatre.

David finally takes the stage. The screaming has to be heard to be believed.

Thanks to B for taking these two pics. I was too lazy to move from my vantage point among the plants.

David on the piano. I absolutely love his rendition of ‘Angels’.

Stunned

that David Cook has become the new American Idol. On hindsight, it wasn’t entirely incomprehensible, simply inconceivable.

And The Better Man Wins!

Seriously, I was so afraid Katharine McPhee would, by some miracle, win American Idol. That’s not to say Taylor Hicks’ victory isn’t a miracle – the dude almost didn’t even make it past the first round because Simon thought he didn’t look like an American Idol (which he was right about).

And so America has voted and found their oldest, unlikeliest and greyest (haired) idol yet! I am overjoyed. The man may not have the best voice, but he sure is the most entertaining. Initially I rooted for him because he was just so weird and yet so carefree at the same time. He was entertaining and he didn’t give a shit about what other people thought about him. I even wondered once if he was mentally, you know, not quite right because his mannerisms were so… unusual. (That made me want him to win too, by the way). Then of course I found out he was perfectly normal.

So congratulations Taylor! I haven’t been so excited about American Idol in a long while – I blame my job for my heightened enthusiasm this time round – and you remind me a little of George Clooney. Can’t wait for the single.

LaToya, you will not be coming back next week.

If Jennifer Hudson caused a storm when she was voted out of American Idol – undeservedly, so they say, LaToya’s elimination is a minor natural disaster. Her very impressive final performance probably didn’t help.

But even though I was shocked, I have to confess a small part of me expected, almost wanted this to happen. There’s no doubt that LaToya is very, very good, but like Paulini, I think she was beginning to stagnate a little. It doesn’t matter, she’ll probably get a recording contract anyway. After all, William Hung didn’t even make it past the preliminaries, and he’s arguably the biggest star of the Idol phenomenon.

I wonder if the American public are getting bored with all this. Maybe they’re toying with this whole series of Idol after Idol after Idol. They voted a small white and a big black for Idol 1 and 2 (this sounds more like coffee than anything), maybe now they’ll vote an Asian. By the way, is this American Idol 3 or 4?

Now all eyes will be on Jasmine Trias. And my sister put it all into perspective when she said, “I feel so sorry for Jasmine, now she has to stay on in the show knowing that everyone thinks she shouldn’t be there.”

Well, I hope she redeems herself. Last week was just bad. And it would be kinda nice to have her win Idol.
